This apparatus has an ETD source that is very useful to analyse post-translational modifications to proteins. The ETD option of the mass spectrometer can preserve post-translational modifications at fragmentation. For example, it is possible to fragment a phosphorylated peptide without losing phosphate during fragmentation, thus enabling its localisation.
